Showcase Top Tips

Preparing a presentation
Creating PowerPoint charts
  • Tell a story – with a beginning, a middle and an end

  • Make it personal (to you and to them)

  • Think what the audience want/need to get out of it

  • Use one (and only one) big idea

  • Keep it simple

  • Decide what outcome you want

  • Prepare, prepare, prepare

  • Rehearse, but not too much – and do it out loud

  • Rehearse answers to possible questions, particularly the tough or naïve ones

  • Avoid subheads and sub bullets

  • Break up complex charts into simple ones - 10 simple charts are better than 1 complex one

  • Choose a font and colour scheme and stick to it

  • Avoid animation, transitions and sound effects

  • Don’t put your speech on the slide

  • Don’t include elements that won’t work on other computers

  • Think about the venue and the resources available

  • Text usually needs to be 20pt or above to be legible

Making a presentation
Following up
  • Grab their attention at the start

  • Don’t read your slides – the audience can do that

  • Use notes not written scripts

  • Take change and keys out of your pockets

  • Remember that the audience is on your side

  • Better to finish early than late; if you’ve nothing to say, shut up

  • Long pauses (count slowly to 10) make you appear confident and thoughtful

  • Beware of telling jokes

  • Detail matters – how you dress, walk on, stand and leave

  • Get the audience’s names and email them afterwards

  • Put the presentation on the internet

  • Make printouts or copies of the presentation available

  • Sit down for 15 minutes and analyse what went well/badly

  • Look for other opportunities to give the same presentation, modified if necessary

  • Every presentation is a networking opportunity

  • Assess the outcome and actions taken
