Local History
Samuel
Pepys, the famous diarist lived in Buckingham Street, just a few doors
down.
The area was the site of
York House, home of George Villiers Duke of Buckingham, assassinated
in 1628. The old street names of the area reflect this history: George
Street, Villiers Street, Duke Street, Of Alley, Buckingham Street.
George Street and Duke
Street have since been renamed, and Of Alley (being short, old and
confusing) is now called New Alley.
At the bottom of the
street there's Gordon’s, the famous wine bar, next to the Watergate;
and in the park there are concerts in the summer, a piece topiary that
mutates from season to season, and a great bust of Sir Arthur
Sullivan.
